ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Appliance

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Appliance

The Bottom Line

This little item is great for anyone who wants to enjoy being outdoors without being bled dry by mosquitoes. It ain't cheap, but it does what it claims, and when you're surrounded by a cloud of skeeters that threaten your very existence, it's worth its weight in gold.

  • Provides about fifteen-foot diameter protection. Works very well, even in the worst conditions.
  • One refill lasts about twelve hours; Easy to use.
  • Repels Mosquitoes and flies (such as black flies).

  • The bottom cap kept falling off, and got lost (ThermaCELL replaced it).
  • When it runs dry, you're hosed without a refill.

  • Portable cordless mosquito repellent "appliance."
  • Uses a butane cartridge to heat up mosquito repellent mats.
  • Electronic ignition means it lights like a gas grill or Aim-n-Flame - kind of noisy, but dependable.

The Only Way to Fly

I have to admit, I was skeptical about this product at first, but it was vouched for by someone who had used it in the skeeter-filled swamp where I'd tested the Bug Tamer, so I knew it was worth a try. The results exceeded my expectations by far.

In the worst conditions, I was surrounded by a black cloud of buzzing, biting torment. Twenty minutes after turning on the ThermaCELL and taping it to my stand, that cloud was gone. Every now and then a skeeter would fly in, but she'd be sluggish and would leave before long.

Buster at Jerry's Indoor Archery done good when he told me about this, and he was right - I won't hunt in skeeter country again without my ThermaCELL. Give it a try if the bugs are thick where you hunt - you won't be disappointed with its effectiveness.

I had great hopes for the Thermacell after reading some of the reviews but my test was very disappointing. I hunt in Dorchester County Maryland just south of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. I read an article written by someone who tests insect repellents for the military and he said if a product works in the area where I hunt and someplace in Maine it will work anywhere in the world. Well I tested the Thermacell and it failed. I don't go into the field without a head net and enough clothes that the little vampires can't get through. At 5:45 am Saturday morning I climbed a tree overlooking a stand of young phragmites wearing my headnet, Goretex jacket and pants. Despite a fair breeze as soon as I got settled in I began hearing the drone of mosquitoes in my ear. I first tested the Off Clip-on using a new battery and refill. I let the unit run for 1/2 hour without any change in the intensity of the attacking pests. I then brought out the Thermacell hoping it would do the job. I opened a new pad and fired it up. I was very hopeful to see or hear some effects but after an hour there was no way I was about to remove my net and trust my fate to the Thermacell. I also did not like the odor of the Thermacell. The package also has this warning on it: Caution: Harmful if inhaled. Do not breathe the vapors. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse. I was outdoors with a breeze and the vapors were choking me up. My question is if the unit is close enough to help you how could you possibly avoid breathing the vapors? I have been hunting in this same area for 40 years and have found only one thing that is truly effective for mosquitoes and that is a product containing at least 23% DEET. I will add the Trermacell to the other gimmicks I have tried over the years and get another can of deep Woods Off.
