ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Appliance

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Appliance

ThermaCELL

The Bottom Line

This little item is great for anyone who wants to enjoy being outdoors without being bled dry by mosquitoes. It ain't cheap, but it does what it claims, and when you're surrounded by a cloud of skeeters that threaten your very existence, it's worth its weight in gold.

Pros

  • Provides about fifteen-foot diameter protection. Works very well, even in the worst conditions.
  • One refill lasts about twelve hours; Easy to use.
  • Repels Mosquitoes and flies (such as black flies).

Cons

  • The bottom cap kept falling off, and got lost (ThermaCELL replaced it).
  • When it runs dry, you're hosed without a refill.

Description

  • Portable cordless mosquito repellent "appliance."
  • Uses a butane cartridge to heat up mosquito repellent mats.
  • Electronic ignition means it lights like a gas grill or Aim-n-Flame - kind of noisy, but dependable.

Guide Review - ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Appliance

The Only Way to Fly

I have to admit, I was skeptical about this product at first, but it was vouched for by someone who had used it in the skeeter-filled swamp where I'd tested the Bug Tamer, so I knew it was worth a try. The results exceeded my expectations by far.

In the worst conditions, I was surrounded by a black cloud of buzzing, biting torment. Twenty minutes after turning on the ThermaCELL and taping it to my stand, that cloud was gone. Every now and then a skeeter would fly in, but she'd be sluggish and would leave before long.

Buster at Jerry's Indoor Archery done good when he told me about this, and he was right - I won't hunt in skeeter country again without my ThermaCELL. Give it a try if the bugs are thick where you hunt - you won't be disappointed with its effectiveness.

Hunters-Read before buying!, Member SheHunts2011

I bought two of these for my husband and myself for use when hunting. We saw the product advertised on an outdoor channel during one of our favorite hunting shows. I ended up calling the company because after reading the outside of the box, I realized that the Thermacell really can't be used while hunting unless you buy the holster. Since the Thermacell retails for $20-$25 and the holster around $16, I think this is significant. The box states under Use Restrictions: ""Do not attach the appliance to your body or clothing. Place appliance on a flat, stable surface with the grill facing upward."" Anyone who hunts regularly from a tree stand knows that there are no 'stable' surfaces in a tree stand. I called their customer service number to try and clear this up. I was told that the Thermacell CAN be used for hunting in a tree stand if the additional product, the holster, is purchased. Since I had already invested $48 in the Thermacells, I felt I had no recourse but to purchase them. I felt this was an important enough issue to share with any other hunters considering using this product, since the majority of reviews here are (and rightfully so) testimonies to the effectiveness of the appliance and not the actual feasibility of using it as advertised. I have not used it yet but I am sure it will be as effective as advertised. For any hunters considering buying one, please keep in mind that unless you will be hunting somewhere that has a flat, stable surface close to you, you WILL need to purchase the Thermacell Holster.
