Smokelesspole!

I have come full circle on the subject of muzzleloading rifles. (Page 2 of 2)

By Russ Chastain, About.com

And so I have done just that, and some would say I have gone to an extreme in doing so. What I've put my hands on is a Savage ML10-II 50-caliber muzzleloader. Stainless steel. Camo synthetic stock. Uses a 209 shotgun primer for ignition, and the primer is way up in the action where rain can't easily reach it. Has a nice modern set of Williams fiber-optic sights on it in case I need to revert to open sights to comply with regulations, but it came drilled and tapped for a scope, and it's wearing a scope right now. But what would have been most appalling to the former me is the fact that this muzzleloading rifle will shoot smokeless powder! Heaven forbid - I would have disowned myself just a few years ago for hunting with such a rifle... and now here I am working up smokeless loads for an upcoming hunt.

When it comes right down to it, there's just nothing wrong with using the best legal tool available for the job at hand. Some folks felt that way from the start, but for me it was a long time coming. And if I have an occasional attack of self-condemnation or if archaic regulations preclude the use of smokeless powder, I can always tote one of my old faithful smokesticks, or stoke the Savage with black powder and my own home-cast Maxi-Hunter bullets (which it shoots very well). But I imagine that whenever it's legal to do so I will probably only tell myself those things to quiet my misguided conscience for a while, and use the Savage smokelesspole.

I still like my sidelock muzzleloaders. I dearly love my old Ruger 44 carbine, and I like my Savage '06 and 270 as well. The same goes for my other poppers. If it shoots, I like it. Somewhere along the line I forgot just what that credo meant... but I'm learning. I'm coming around.

This Savage shoots. I like it.
