Thanksgiving Deer Hunt 2002 - 12/23/02
My hunting luck finally took a turn for the better during a recent deer hunting trip to Georgia... I didn't take anything spectacular according to some "trophy hunters," but it was a wonderful way to end a long dry spell.

Review - Leatherman Juice CS4 Multi-Tool - 12/06/02
This well-made tool rides comfortably in the pocket and performs many tasks well. In many ways it's even better than the original Leatherman PST.

Opening Weekend Blues - 11/27/02
Whatever happened on this opening weekend would set it apart from all others. We were able to find plenty of sweat, sunburn, skeeters, bears and turkey. But where were all the deer?

Review - ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent - 11/13/02
This unique item is the best thing I've ever seen for beating the skeeters back so you can enjoy your time outdoors hunting or fishing. It's like nothing I'd ever seen before!

Book Review - Smoke Follows Beauty - 10/30/02
This collection of short stories is probably better left unread... follow the link above to read why I think so.

Review - Knight & Hale Hands Free Easy Grunter Plus - 10/23/02
This innovative deer grunt call allows you to grunt in a buck without using your hands, and allows you to shoot--even a bow--while using it... and, you can aim the call to better direct the sound.

Review - Gunslinger Corral Compact Rifle Holster - 09/25/02
This nifty item keeps your rifle or shotgun handy without the need to keep your hands on it. Works great, and I will be using mine quite a bit this season.

Review - Gore-Tex Supprescent Clothing by Browning - 09/15/02
Waterproof, windproof, and scent-free?! Yep, it's all this and more... and I sure did enjoy it on my last Texas goose hunt.

Review - Outlaw Whitetail Deer Decoy - 08/09/02
This tough, realistic-looking deer decoy can be set up as a big buck, small buck, or doe, and is surprisingly realistic.

Review - Gladder Bladder - 08/02/02
An unusual item, for the kind of guy (it's not made for gals) who doesn't like to pee in the woods. You don't even have to move when you get the urge to "go!"

Review - Spare Bladder - 07/25/02
An interesting product for containing your urine if you're the kind of hunter who doesn't like to tinkle in the woods.

A Question of Crossbows - 07/17/02
Should crossbows be allowed during archery hunting season? Some folks say yes, but others balk at the notion. What is the truth of the matter? Here we look at some facts and fiction about crossbows.

Book Review - Horn of the Hunter - 07/03/02
The story of the author's first African Safari, which he took with his wife. It was the beginning of a relationship between man and Africa that would last for years, and bring out the best in Robert Ruark's writing.

Book Review - The Old Man and the Boy - 06/26/02
The best book on American hunting and fishing I've ever read. If common sense, nature and ethics interest you, this book is one you don't want to miss!

Book Review - The Old Man's Boy Grows Older - 06/19/02
More great Ruark, on hunting, his grandfather, and life in general.

Book Review - The Lost Classics of Robert Ruark - 06/13/02
These Lost Classics (mainly old magazine articles and insightful texts) are extremely entertaining and enlightening. I recommend reading this book immediately prior to Horn of the Hunter, as I did this and was immensely pleased.

Snowbound - The Blizzard of '77 - 06/05/02
When Melissa Rodriguez, About's Guide to Scuba Diving, read my review of Erno Rossi's book about the Blizzard of 1977, she Emailed me to say that she had lived through that very blizzard! Here is her tale, which is very similar to many of the stories in Mr. Rossi's book.

Uncle! - 05/30/02
Some folks other than my parents contributed to my raising, especially when it came to hunting. Here's a tribute to the special kind of folks who would treat a boy as an equal when that's exactly what he needs.

Book Review - White Death - 05/23/02
Check out this book about the infamous blizzard which hit the USA and Canada simultaneously in 1977. You may learn some good stuff about staying alive in nasty weather, and I think you'll be entertained, too.

Springtime in Georgia - 05/16/02
Here's what I did on my spring vacation in Georgia... hunting, shooting, fishing, and a whole lot of work. Oh well, at least I got a new rifle while I was there!

Review - Clear Shot Lens Shade - 04/17/02
This simple little item could mean the difference between you cussing the sun's glare and bringing home a mess of venison!

Review - Fetch It - 04/10/02
This nifty tool is great for retrieving dropped items from your tree stand, like the glove or headnet that always seems to get away from you and wind up on the ground.

The Best of Time - 03/27/02
Time spent in the woods hunting is some of the best there is! Time flies, time drags... but it's all time well-spent.

Muzzleloading - the Final Chapter - 03/21/02
Well, it took all night and half a day, but I finished the article on building a muzzleloader from a kit. Seventeen pages of info and pics, with 92 more pages of larger graphics. Topics include fitting sights, inletting wedge pin plates, sanding and finishing stock, polishing and bluing, and tools used.

Review - Trewax Clear Paste Wax - 03/14/02
This wax is said to be a good protectant for guns, and a release agent for bullet molds, too. I haven't tried it on my bullet molds, but it didn't really impress me as a protectant.

Even More Muzzleloader Construction - 03/07/02
Installing the trigger assembly & adjusting lock, polishing and fitting the nose cap and trigger guard.

More Muzzleloader Construction - 02/28/02
Fitting the Lock, Fitting the Barrel to Tang, and Fitting the Barrel and Tang to the Stock.

Building a Muzzleloader - 02/22/02
Let's see... I like building, and I like guns. Why not combine the two? Well, that's just what I've done! Check out this first installment in a series of how-I-did-it articles on the building of this CVA Hawken Rifle.

Review -ProTec GUNoil and GUNgrease Syringes - 02/06/02
A couple more of ProTec's gun maintenance products -- both oil and grease, in convenient precision applicators.

Review - ProTec GUNoil and BOREcleaner Pump Sprays - 02/06/02
ProTec makes some interesting products, and these are just a couple of them. Oil and solvent in metal pump spray bottles. See above for their oil and grease syringes.

Texas Goose Hunt - 01/26/02
Driving from Florida to Texas just to hunt a few geese? What was I thinking?! Actually, it turned out quite well, with the usual ups and downs of any hunting trip. We even got some geese!

Bear Essentials - 01/16/02
Keening, backpack-tasting, wrestling, tooth-popping -- it's all here! A look at some more encounters with Florida Black Bears.
