The Colt Commander has fans and detractors, but no matter what, the feel of a 1911 grip in my hand will always make me smile. What do you think? Love it, hate it, or what? Colt 45

I own a colt 45 auto 1991A1 & purchased a 22 conversion kit that my 8 yr old grandson enjoys shooting.

Colt Commander

As a retired Army NCO, I've shot many .45s, including the Commander. Personally, I've never seen any sense in the Commander. The shortened barrel does not add that much concealability, the recoil is significantly increased, and the sighting radius is shortened. Additionally, unless you add a longer beavertail, that hammer will bite a big hand.

38 Super Colt Commander

I bought the above pistol about 30 years ago. I quickly found out that the pistol would not extract the ammo used. I discovered from the literature that this was a design flaw from Colt and had to send it to get repaired. This just shows you the quality control that some manufacturers have. Same holds for the 357 maximum cartridge.

1911

Mine is from the Army. Had it since 1969. It also doubles as a boat anchor :-)

Colt Commander

I've often wondered about this handgun. The Armed Forces issue a Colt Auto 32 or 380 to its general officers as a personal firearm. Never came across any of them carrying a Colt Commander. Of course they all have their own choice of side arm - look at what Patton carried. I'm very partial to the standard sized 1911. Normally shoot well with it, but I'm not so lucky with the Commander. Given the length of the barrel it is probably a mind thing though. It should do well as a concealed carry and the size of the round can be as large as a 45 Cal. I've only come across a seven round magazine for it - versus the eight round magazine for the full size Colt. [Editor's note: The Commander takes the exact same mags as any single-stack 1911. -RC]

Caspian Commander/Officer's Model Combo

Although I have not used a Colt Commander, I do recommend a hybrid kit from Caspian Arms in Wolcott, Vt. an Officer's Model receiver with a Commander Slide. If you want it ready made, get a CZ Dan Wesson CCO. It's more concealable than the Commander with full 45 ACP power. And it would warm John Moses Browning's heart. I'm a 1911 fan bar none.
