Trap Shooting

By Russ Chastain, About.com

Definition: Trap Shooting is a clay target shooting game, performed with a 12 gauge shotgun.

In American trap shooting, a single trap is used, which swings back and forth to change angles, so the shooter never knows at what angle his target may fly. International trap uses a series of fifteen fixed traps, which throw targets in widely varying directions and trajectories - up, down, left, and right.

There are a number of variations of this popular shotgun game. For more information, contact the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) .

Pronunciation: trap shoo-ting
Also Known As: Trap; Trapshooting
Examples: Trap shooting is often used to hone one's bird shooting skills prior to bird hunting season.
