Impressive Record, But no pre-2008 Olympic Medals:
Sonja Pfeilschifter of Germany is an experienced competitive rifle shooter, without a doubt. Her first Olympic appearance was in 1992. She also shot at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, but didn't win an Olympic medal at any of those Games. She has won many world-class victories, and in May of 2008 she clobbered the previous world record in Women's 10m Air Rifle, scoring a 505.0, edging out China's Du Li (who set the previous record of 504.9) and Czech Republic's Katerina Emmons (who matched Du Li's record earlier in 2008).
2008 May be Her Year... or Not:
Sonja's performance in both 10m Air Rifle and 3 Position Rifle (3P) competition certainly indicated that she had a wonderful chance to take home her first Olympic medal in 2008. In the pre-Olympic shooting event in Beijing, she won the Gold medal for 3P. She also won Silver in the 10m Air Rifle event. At the 2008 Women's 10m Air Rifle Event, Sonja didn't win a medal, and didn't even place in the top five. She later ended up in 17th place in Women's 3-Position Rifle, which ended her chances of winning a 2008 Olympic medal.
Sonja shoots left-handed, which sets her apart from most other competitors.
