About Olympic Shooting

By Russ Chastain, About.com

Olympic Shooting isn't an event you're likely to see covered on TV very often, though it is certainly as much fun to watch as, say, tennis. Nobody at the TV networks ever consults me in these matters. The nerve!

Anyhow, whether it's on TV or not, Olympic Shooting is quite interesting and very competitive, and a lot more folks would be likely to get into it if they knew more about it. So, here's what you need to know!

About Olympic Shooting:

Olympic Shooting has been played at most of the Olympic Games. The lineup of shooting activities has changed quite a bit over the years, as have the guns used, but it is still a big part of the Summer Games, and should continue to be for a long time to come.

The Athletes:

Hey, it's the shooters that make the sport, right? So here's some good info for ya. From the youngest (Kim Rhode) to the oldest (Libby Callahan), and all kinds of stuff in between.

Shooting Action Image Gallery:

Some photos of Olympic shooters in action. This includes Gold Medal winners Kimberly Rhode and Matthew Emmons of the USA, and more. Emmons goes from indignant to ecstatic - from a zero-point final round to a Gold Medal victory.

Olympic Shooting History:

Olympic Shooting has changed a lot over the years since it was first played in 1896. Shooting first began as a means of survival, rather than competition, and was a valuable tool for self-defense as well as a good means of obtaining food through hunting. Naturally when any group of people are doing the same thing, some do it better than others, and this is no doubt the reason why shooting competitions began.
