Princeton Tec

The Bottom Line

From what I've seen of their headlight products, Princeton Tec is a clear leader in the field. This light is no exception; it is well-made and well-designed. While the remote battery pack can be awkward and may get in the way, its capacity of 8 AA batteries makes this the brightest headlight I have ever used - and it allows one to keep the batteries inside clothing in extreme cold. The on/off switch is easy to operate, and the same switch changes light modes easily. This is a very good light.

Pros

  • Four light settings: high/low Xenon, high/low LED.
  • Uses alkaline, lithium, or rechargable batteries.
  • One easy switch for on/off and changing light modes.
  • Headgear is comfortable and very light because batteries are in remote pack.
  • Brightest headlight I have ever used.

Cons

  • Remote battery pack is heavy with 8 batteries, and can be awkward & get in the way.
  • Cord gets in the way and tugs at headgear.
  • No top strap on headlight means it can slip down at times.

Description

  • LED/Xenon headlamp with remote battery pack and four light settings.
  • Remote battery pack holds up to eight AA batteries (can be operated on fewer).
  • Battery pack is tough and durable, and has two clips so you can hang it where you need it.
  • Headgear is light and comfortable, though at times the cord can tug at it.
  • Single Xenon bulb has high & low settings. Three "super bright long burn" LEDs work at high or low.
  • Light modes vary from low reading light (good for setting up a stand) to very bright spotlight beam.
  • The light itself is water resistant... but the battery pack, not so much.
  • Battery pack could easily be worn under rain gear in wet conditions.
  • Lifetime Warranty. Made in USA.
  • When batteries get low, automatically switches to low LED setting so you're not left in the dark.

Guide Review - Princeton Tec Yukon Extreme Headlight

From what I've seen of their headlight products, Princeton Tec is a clear leader in the field. This light is no exception; it is well-made and well-designed.

While the remote battery pack can be awkward and may get in the way, its capacity of 8 AA batteries makes this the brightest headlight I have ever used - and it allows one to keep the batteries inside clothing in extreme cold to lengthen their effective life (hence the name Yukon Extreme). The cord can be awkward and it often pulls at the headgear, which can be aggravating.

The single pushbutton switch is easy to operate, and one switch does it all. A hard push turns it on or off, and a light push switches between the four light modes - high/low Xenon and high/low LED. The best part about this arrangement is you don't have to turn the light off to change modes.

The high Xenon setting is absolutely amazing, and pierces the night better than many larger handheld lights. Lower settings save on battery life, and the Xenon beam can be adjusted from flood to spot if need be.

This is a very good light, and if it's brightness and long battery life you need, this one works well. If you find that the weight of eight batteries is to much, the light will also operate with just four in the pack.
