Hunting Outfitter

By Russ Chastain, About.com

Definition: This is one of those terms that can mean more than one thing. Most often, it refers to a person or company which conducts hunting trips. The outfitter generally provides camping gear, food, and other supplies, as well as guide services, to hunters who are usually hunting in unfamiliar territory.

Some companies that sell hunting gear and clothing may refer to themselves as outfitters, also.

Any set of activity-specific gear was once commonly referred to as an outfit. This usage has faded, but the outfitter name endures.

Pronunciation: Owt-fit-er
Examples: The hunting outfitter provided all the comforts of home during a hunt in the wilderness.
