Definition: A food plot is an area of agricultural planting intended for the benefit of wild animals. "Plot" refers to the plot of land containing it, which may be of almost any size, ranging from a narrow strip to fields of many acres. "Food" refers to the fact that the plants grown in the plot are intended to be food for local wild animals.
Hunters plant food plots to benefit wildlife populations in general. Goals include added nutrition to improve the overall health (and, sometimes, the size) of the animals, to help attract and/or keep deer or other game animals in the area, and to make convenient locations to observe and/or hunt the wildlife.
Consult your local agricultural extension office for advice on what, when, and how to plant wildlife food plots on your neck of the woods.
