Ammo Choices
As with any 357 magnum revolver, 38 special ammo may also be used in this gun, and is often preferred by many (myself included) for target shooting and most practice shooting. 357 groceries ain't cheap, and I generally zero my gun to hit at point of aim with my chosen 357 defense ammo and do some practice with that. For most of my range time with a 357, I'll burn 38 special ammo and alter my sight picture as needed - without adjusting the sights.
Trigger Pull
Double action trigger pull on this gun is typical for Ruger - heavy and inconsistent. I was surprised to find its single action pull to be very good, and although I didn't have a scale with me to weigh it, I was impressed. Not knowing the full history of this gun, I don't know whether it has had any post-factory trigger work done to it.
Conclusion
The Ruger Security Six/Model 117 is a six-shot double action revolver, chambered for the 357 Smith & Wesson magnum cartridge. 38 S&W Special may also be used safely in this gun. Factory barrel lengths were 2.75", 4", and 6", and most Security Sixes have adjustable rear sights. This model was made from around 1970 until 1985. (Dates from various sources range from 1970 to 1972, with Ruger's website citing 1972.)
The Security Six is a solid gun, and should be a dependable one, as well. Should disassembly be required, it can be accomplished using few tools, one of which is a pin provided by the factory and stored inside the left grip panel.
This model is known to provide accuracy and dependability suitable for informal target shooting and self defense.
