Starting With a Bang - the Winchester Super-X Rifle

What a day, what a day.

It started out good, and it only got better. What the heck am I talking about? Well, it was a day crammed full of shooting and, well, more shooting. From new guns and ammo to old faithful designs, this was definitely a day to remember.

I'll start, as always, at the beginning. The first rifle that jumped out at me when I got to the firing line was an auto - and it wore Winchester's name. The model is Super-X, chambered for 30-06 Springfield. It was sitting there with its bolt locked open, begging to be shot. I helped myself to the shooting bench and loaded up the easily-removed box magazine, slapped it in and started hunting for a bolt release. Ain't got one!

Pulling back on the bolt and releasing should have released it, but it didn't. One of the factory reps got it closed, and I went ahead and shot it, with Winchester Super-X CXP2 150 grain Power Points. Not counting one flyer out of the first four rounds, it was inside of an inch. With the flyer it was 2.5 or maybe 3 inches. Not bad for a first time outing, and it was fun shooting.

This particular rifle's main flaw was its bolt release, or should I say the lack thereof. It could only be closed by fiddling with the magazine. Coming from the legendary FN (Fabrique Nationale) in Belgium, I would have expected something more from it... but this was just one rifle, and a hard-used demo gun at that. I will reserve judgement on it, for now. What I can say for sure is that it was a lot of fun, and accurate too.
