Definition: A quantity of propellant (gunpowder) used in a cartridge or muzzleloading gun for the purpose of propelling shot or a bullet. The size of appropriate powder charges varies greatly, depending on many factors such as type of propellant, size of bullet, acceptable pressure levels, etc.
