Definition: A tree stand is an platform, seat, or other contrivance meant for the purpose of hunting deer or other game animals from an elevated position. There are many varieties of tree stands. As the name implies, tree stands rely upon a tree to act as an integral part of the stand, and cannot be used without a tree.
Other stands exist that do not rely on trees, such as tripods and box blinds. These stands may be erected independently, without the need for trees to help support the stand. These qualify as deer stands, but are not tree stands.
Commercial tree stands come in a number of variations, such as climbing stands, ladder stands, and hang-on stands. Of these, the hang-on stand is the lightest and probably the most dangerous.
