Product Summary
Trewax Clear Paste Wax

Trewax Clear Paste Wax
Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Won't soak into wood stocks like oil can.
•  Usually protects from rust where applied.
•  Easy to apply.
Cons  •  Doesn't last much (if any) longer than oil.
•  Looks bad on checkering, and hard to remove.
•  Seems to promote rust in some cases.
The Bottom Line - Trewax seems to be a good quality wax, but I don't think it's at its best on steel. I'll stick with a good quality oil in most cases, being careful to keep it off of the stock.

Trewax vs. Oil
When a fellow in the forum insisted that Trewax was best for protecting guns, I had to check it out. I procured a sample, which I used on some guns and reloading gear.

What I found was odd. Lots of reloading gear is blued steel, which rusts after being handled, in this humid heat. Oddly, Trewax didn't offer much protection. They still rusted, seemingly faster with the wax applied. Perhaps I didn't clean them well, and salts from my skin remained under the wax.

It did well on my guns, but didn't seem to last much (if any) longer than a coat of good oil. It works best on glossy blues, not so well on matte finishes. Uncoated areas adjacent to coated areas seemed more likely to rust than they would otherwise.

I'll stick with a quality oil, myself.
