Guide Review

Speakeasy Ultra Lives up to its Name
I've been using Midland Speakeasy Ultra 75-517 FRS Weather radios for several months now, and am quite satisfied. Overall, I think they are great, and are packed with features.

One of the first things I did was to disable the roger beep, which each radio emits upon release of the PTT (push to talk) button. I also killed the button press beep. The last thing I want when hunting is some gadget beeping at me! Even with roger beep disabled, Motorola Talkabout radios beep after the Midland is done transmitting.

Unfortunately, I can't disable the Call function, which causes a musical beep on all radios within range when the button's pushed. It's meant to get someone's attention so he/she knows to listen up, and it's useful. It's also easy to hit the call button by accident - and then the person(s) on the other end may cuss you for spooking all the game in their area. If you and your friends are careful, it's a non-issue.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy these radios, and found them more comfortable and easier to use than Motorola's popular Talkabout radios. Alkaline batteries in the Talkabouts did not last nearly as long as the Ni-Cd cells in the SpeakEasys.
