Review: Steiner 8x44 Peregrine XP Binoculars

Thursday November 5, 2009

I got a pair of these 8x binocs on loan for my elk hunt, and I've used them for deer hunting as well. They're mighty good (as the high price suggests). And it was interesting to note that they offered about as much magnification as a Leupold scope set at 12x...

The Best of Time

Thursday November 5, 2009

It sure is nice to spend time in the woods. Things happen differently out there, and time will often either fly or stand still, depending on circumstances and adrenaline. Time in the woods will often bring back good old memories, even as you're making new ones... and that's always worthwhile.

Thanksgiving Deer Hunt 2002

Thursday November 5, 2009

Time sure does fly... it sure doesn't seem like it's been seven years since this hunt, when I took a couple whitetails after a long run of mediocre luck.

Flying With Guns

Thursday October 29, 2009

Sometimes, it seems like everybody who doesn't own a gun is dead set against those of us who do - especially when it comes to airports and traveling. But that is not always the case, and guidelines are in place that allow for relatively easy and problem-free transport of your firearms on commercial airline flights.

When I flew to Denver and back earlier this month, it was my first time flying with guns. It turned out not to be that big a deal. I even decided not to regret the high cost of my gun case, considering the value of the guns that were crammed inside of it.

Dad Just Keeps on Hunting

Thursday October 29, 2009

Many years ago, a hunter was born. He became a fine man who made good friends and was true to them, and he loved hunting more than just about everything else. That man was my father, and he passed away in 2008. His friends and I sure do miss him, especially during hunting season - but Dad didn't let a little thing like death stop him from helping an old friend bag a buck with one of his rifles, several months after his death.

Ruger 44 Carbine Assembly Help

Thursday October 29, 2009

Once upon a time, several years before I was born, Sturm, Ruger, and Company built their first commercially-available rifle - and it wasn't the 10-22! It was a handy little semi-auto 44 magnum carbine, and I used one exclusively during my first two decades of deer hunting. They can be tricky to assemble, though...

Wondering what scope is best for your gun? If so, you're not alone... many other folks over the years have wondered the same thing. Hopefully, this article will help make your decision easier...

Review: FireTacks Trail Markers

Thursday October 22, 2009

Firetacks are pretty handy little things, and they beat the standard "reflective thumbtacks" that I've spotted in the woods so many times. Better yet, they can be had in stealthy colors that don't stand out in daylight hours, and you can get away with using one tack (instead of two) for going in and out of your stand...

Review: Reel Sling Retractable Rifle and Shotgun Sling

Thursday October 15, 2009

Reel Sling

This nifty high-quality sling retracts using a high-strength tether and reel design, and separates into two stowable pieces so it never leaves your gun. It's a unique item, and could be great for some hunters in some applications, but it was awkward and a bit noisy for my taste...

Review: Red Oxx Gun Runner and Flat Dog Soft Gun Cases

Wednesday October 14, 2009

Red Oxx Gun Runner Gun Case

In writing this review, I discovered that Red Oxx makes very good cases. They're a good bit tougher than any other soft case I've tried, and they look good doing it. Not to mention they're guaranteed forever! I sometimes found it useful to use these two cases on the same gun to provide extra protection, and at other times I'll use 'em separately. Sometimes I use the Flat Dog on a gun before I put it into a hard case, too. All in all, they're very useful and well made.
