Hunting is a very personal experience, and we don't all do it for the same reasons. Or maybe we do, and we don't always express it the same way. Anyhow, this article is meant to be a collection of quotes from readers, telling what hunting means to them. (1) Lee Wooten :

Hunting is a very personal experience for me. It wouldn’t be to awful personal and great if it wouldn’t have been for my cousin Brian. Brian took me on my first deer hunt. I killed my first deer with him. Also, we had a special tradition every year that I still carry out.

On my first time hunting my cousin, which was more like a brother to me, took me out to the woods to sit with me in the stand. My first time in the woods was a great experience with my favorite cousin. We sit in the box stand and waited for a deer to show. The leaves where blowing and you could here the squirles playing as the sun rose up from behind the trees to reveal an eight point buck walking out. As a 13 year old boy this was awesome to see my hero take this buck down with one single shot.

My cousin was also the one that took me on the hunt that i killed my first deer. When I was 17 i went to georgia to stay with Brian and hunt for one week. The first day we went out to the woods he sit me in his favorite stand and he went to another stand. I sit in that stand for 2 and a half hours before anything came out. After sitting and waiting 2 does and a 6 point buck came out from behind some thorn bushes down in the bottom. My adrenaline was pumping so bad that i froze for what seemed like an hour. Then i slowly lifted my gun and lined up the sights. I took the shot and it was a perfect kill. I swear my cousin made it from a mile away through the woods in about 3 minutes and was more excited than i was. Not but 6 months later Brian was found in his apartment shot and killed.

Me and my cousin had a special tradition that we carried out every year when he was alive and i still carry it out every single year. Every year on Thanksgiving Day Brian and I would go hunting all day and only leave long enough to eat Thanksgiving dinner with our Grandparents. Also we would go the whole week of Christmas as many times as we could. I miss the time we spent in the woods but I will Keep going during them times because it is so special.

I dont ever care if I kill anything when I go hunting. All it is about is spending the time in the woods thinking about him and thinking that he is still sitting beside me waiting for a deer to come out. I wish i had better places and more places to go hunting. I only have one place to go and i hardly ever see anything. I wish i could find some more places to go so I could kill that one huge buck that my cousin would be very proud of and I would hope he would be watching when i kill it.

I was 17 when Brian was found dead at the age of 21.

This is my special story and I hope that you like it and that you hunt for a special reason and not just for fun.

Sincerely,
Lee Wooten
