Gun Sales Continue to Climb

By , About.com GuideFebruary 5, 2009

Follow me on:

For the third month in a row, NSSF reports a dramatic increase in NICS background checks. (This is the background check required of anyone buying a gun through a licensed gun dealer. It doesn't reflect gun sales 100%, but very few people will have the check run unless they are getting ready to buy a gun.)

Compared with January 2008, background checks in January 2009 jumped by 28.8%. In December, the increase was 24%, and in November it was a whopping 42%!

Says NSSF: "NICS reported 1,213,885 checks in January, up from 942,556 in the same month a year ago."

It seems that business is bad these days - unless you sell guns.

It's pretty obvious that the American people have little faith that Barack Hussein Obama's regime has good intentions regarding civil rights. Expectations of renewed assaults on gun rights - which BHO has promised - have caused many, many Americans to buy guns over the past three months. And according to some friends of mine - who have advised many of their gun-curious neighbors and church members - many of these buyers are "people we would never have expected to buy a gun."

Excuse me while I heave a deep sad sigh. It saddens me greatly that there is even a possibility that gun rights may be further restricted. That this threat exists is evidence of the evil and stupidity inherent in humanity.

But I digress! Listen: If you want to be able to defend yourself in the coming days, you'd better arm yourself while you have the chance. It's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Seek training, so you can be sure you know how to use it.

In addition to the political chasm into which we reel, we have a constantly slumping economy. This means that crime is on the upswing. Research has shown time and time again that firearms ownership is a wonderful crime deterrent - and it might make the difference between the life and death of yourself or a loved one.

Arm yourself. The criminals certainly are.

Ehhh, here we go again. Look if I wanted to hear your opinions on our current president, then I’d scroll to the Politics newsletter. You’re just supporting the steoreotype that only conservative backwards hicks love guns.
I’m from Texas and I’m liberal, and I love my guns, but dammit keep your political thoughts to yourself.
It’s very unpatriotic to bash your president, you know.

LOL! If it was unpatriotic to dislike (publicly or privately) the ruler of your nation, then the USA would never have been founded! And no sitting President would ever fail to be re-elected. Get a grip. My apologies if the facts I’ve presented have offended you.

Russ I appreciate this article and am proud that someone has the guts to call it like it is. You may want to consider looking into the demographics of people purchasing guns — there was an interview from a Florida gun owner who said he was selling mostly to elderly women. Not sure how true but consider looking into it. I recently purchased my first handgun and I am white collar professional — I never thought I would buy one but am terrified by the current administration and the socialist agenda. History repeats itself, Obama plans are going to push us into another Great Depression.

As for the comment from the liberal from Texas, “unpatriotic to bash your president” why was it okay to bash president Bush but not Obama, The Liberal and his pony tailed liberal buddies are sipping latte’s while real men are working for minimum wage plus room/board to protect him and his pathetic sheltered views. He has most likely had everything given to him in life and doesn’t know what work is. I would like to him see air dropped into any one of the hostile countries that we protect. Most likely he would never make it out — but if he managed to come out alive we would see the real man come out. He would be a man who gets on his knees and gives thanks, He would be a man who loves one another, He would be a man who cares for others and he would be a man who could see through the socialistic ideals of the current administration.

The Liberal from Texas needs to wake up and make the RIGHT choice before he looses the RIGHT to do so.

Well said.

Already on the front burner is HR 45, a rabidly anti-freedom House bill that would plunge us into gun owner registration and the criminilization of anyone who owns a gun.

I love this country, but I surely despise the things that our “leaders” try to do to us. Notice I did not say “for us,” because I know better.

Great article, Please keep us informed about these liberials. They will try to sneak it into a bill and rush it through like the H.R.1 stimulis. We will take control and fight back. Defeat that liberial democrat.

Have you seen the speech from the Prime Minister of Australia? Now this guy has something to say. He has remembered how to be kind but not compromise what their country was founded on. Obama is simply rewriting the constitution, which he said he would do, by passing other legislation that circumvents it. We need to wake up. Our leadership has lost it’s cahonies, which founded this country, and given them up to make everyone more comfortable. The old west was called a “polite society” and it was cause everyone carried a gun. Hmmm? sound good to me.

Hello did you Republicans forget that your the reason why we now have this problem, that whole war business and not electing a winning candidate? For f#@! sake! The last proposed “Assault Weapons” ban before Mr. Holder was a Republican! There is no going back, we are going to become just like Europe, first the guns, then they will be able to start eroding all the other civil rights more easily.

LOL! Why do you ASSume that we are Republicans? I consider myself a Constitutionalist, though not necessarily affiliated with that party.

I don’t like Republican politicians as a rule, but they usually tend to leave my gun rights alone (not always, of course).

It sounds as if you’re giving up without a fight. That’s sad. Let’s try our best to make government “of the people” work, by trying to get our representatives in Congress to actually represent us.

If you don’t at least do that, then you’re far more to blame than those of us who do – regardless of political affiliation.
