Should I Shoot a Scoped Rifle With Both Eyes Open?
Thursday January 3, 2008
This is a question I've heard a number of times. Me, I've never seen the value of keeping both eyes open when using a scope, but it works great for some shooters. Which way is the right way to shoot?

Your comments are right on Russ. If they’re comfortable closing one eye and it doesn’t “tense up the sight picture” (i.e. facial muscles) and shoot reasonably well – so be it for most casual ‘marksmen’ / hunters. I do keep
both eyes open but have long ago trained my brain to “ignore” or not really concentrate / look with the other.
For one of my sons this doesn’t work – so he does close one eye.
If one’s eyes are reasonably close keeping the other non-shooting eye is less a “problem”; if one is blessed with the combination of true left eye dominant and right handedness this is less likely to work – for example; it can be difficult to “tune-out” the signal of the very dominant left eye in this scenario – even though the scope itself itself will (for lack of a better term) overcompensate for this mis-match.
Thanks Paul. Always good to hear about real-world experience from fellow hunters! Especially one with your experience and common sense (as I know from our communicaitons in the forum).
